Homeland education – school in the museum

As part of the Karlovac City Museum's pedagogical activities, following the opening of the new location of the Museum of the Homeland War, a new program was designed in cooperation with the Karlovac County, the City of Karlovac, and primary and secondary school from the territory of Karlovac and Karlovac County. In order to continue the practice of teaching in the museum, we organize a visit program every year.

According to the curriculum for the Nature and Society class, students of the 4th grade of primary school learn about the symbols of the Republic of Croatia, the Homeland War, being a state of the European Union, the population, neighboring countries etc., while towards the end of the school year, 8th grade students in their History class learn about the Homeland War on the national level. Furthermore, the Homeland War is a teaching unit in the 2nd grade of secondary vocational schools, and in the 4th grade of general-education secondary schools.

In order to use in the teaching process the museum institutions closely thematically related to certain historical periods, and to make the learning process more interesting, the children spend two school periods in the Museum of the Homeland War Karlovac – Turanj. The tour comprises an introductory lecture on “Karlovac in the Homeland War of 1991 – 1995”, in which the children learn about the events on the Karlovac battlefield, but also about the process of the establishment of independent and sovereign Republic of Croatia. From the beginnings of national turmoil, through the establishment of a multi-party system, adoption of the Christmas Constitution, proclamation of the Republic of Croatia and its international recognition, and the war years, all the way to the victory in the Storm MPO, children learn about the lives of defenders and civilians who had in different ways given their contribution to the defense and creation of their homeland. The second part of the visit entails a tour of the indoor and outdoor part of the permanent display. With professional guidance by a curator and curator pedagogue, in the modern display children explore, discuss and learn autonomously. They listen to the stories of the museum artifacts and become sensitized to visiting museums and cultural institutions in general.
