In Karlovac, a new cycle of the project "Visit of eighth-grade students to Karlovac" started yesterday, organized by the Museum of the City of Karlovac and the Vukovar Homeland War Memorial Center. The students and teachers were greeted by the head of the Administrative Department for Social Activities of the City of Karlovac, Draženka Sila-Ljubenko, and the director of the Museum of the City of Karlovac, Hrvojka Božić.
This year, more than 3,500 students and companions will visit Karlovac's sights, the Museum of the Homeland War, Karlovac - Turanj and Defender's Alley, the Old Town of Dubovac, and the freshwater aquarium - Aquatika. The cooperation between the Museum of the City of Karlovac and the Memorial Center of the Homeland War Vukovar has lasted for several years, and the Museum of the Homeland War is the starting point of the sightseeing program of the city of Karlovac and its cultural points.
The goal of the project is to expand students' knowledge about the Homeland War by learning about the importance of certain areas for the defense of the sovereign and independent Republic of Croatia. In the period from April to June, students from 5 counties visit Karlovac: Vukovar-Srijem, Osijek-Baranja, Virovitica-Podravina, Brod-Posavina, and Požega-Slavonia. The one-day field classes begin at the Museum of the Homeland War in Karlovac - Turanj with an introductory lecture "Karlovac in the Homeland War 1991 - 1995" and a tour of the permanent exhibition accompanied by expert curators and pedagogues. Through the visit, students learn about the events on the Karlovac battlefield and the lives of veterans and civilians who contributed in various ways to the defense of Karlovac and the creation of the Republic of Croatia.
After visiting the Museum of the Homeland War Karlovac - Turanj, the students visit Veterans' Alley where they listen to the testimonies of the defenders of the city of Karlovac, then tour the Old Town of Dubovac and Aquatica. Through this project, a large number of young people from eastern Croatia get to know the sights of Karlovac and gain an understanding of the Homeland War as a historical period, but also the Homeland War in the context of today's times and it's meaning for the inhabitants of the Republic of Croatia today.
