Days of pride – Heroic defense of Dubrovnik in 1991.

In the Homeland War Museum Karlovac - Turanj, the guest exhibition of the Dubrovnik Homeland War Museum "Days of Pride - Heroic Defense of Dubrovnik 1991" was opened.

The exhibition comprehensively deals with the most difficult period of the war in Dubrovnik, from the beginning of the general aggressor attack on October 1 to December 6, 1991. It consists of three separate thematic units: The beginning of the general military attack on the Dubrovnik area (October 1991), the most difficult days of the heroic defense of the city (November 1991 .), and Day for All Days – December 6, 1991.

In the first thematic unit, the course of war operations and events in the territory of the then Municipality of Dubrovnik in the initial phase of the general military attack in October 1991 was shown. This is evidenced by the fact that instead of the planned quick occupation of the south of Croatia, suffering unexpectedly heavy defeats and losses, the enemy came to the very approach to the city of Dubrovnik only at the end of October, after occupying Konavle and Župa Dubrovnik.

The second thematic unit deals with the fiercest and most destructive attacks on the inner city area during November 1991, accompanied by large human casualties, but also by the constant effort of the aggressor to force the defenders to surrender and thus occupy the city.

In the third thematic unit, we follow the course of events during and immediately after the criminal attack on the City on December 6, 1991, when the aggressor was dealt a decisive military and political defeat by the heroism and sacrifice of its defenders. Although Dubrovnik suffered on that day, unprecedented in history, the destruction of the historical core by vandals, it managed to preserve its greatest preciousness - Freedom and announce the final victory.

The Museum of the Homeland War Dubrovnik opened this exhibition for the first time on the 30th anniversary of the successful heroic defense of the city, and on this occasion, the exhibition has its first visit: to Karlovac, which suffered aggression during the same three key months in 1991 as Dubrovnik when the fate was decided of our cities and the whole of Croatia.

An accompanying pedagogical program will be organized as part of the exhibition. Juraj Horvatin is the visiting curator of the exhibition

The exhibition was financed by the Karlovac City Museums and will last from February 22 to May 21, 2023.
