The museums of the city of Karlovac celebrated the Day of St. Patrick with a program dedicated to Laval Nugent, the former owner of the Dubovac Castle who saved it from decay in the 19th century. In the Dubovac Castle, on Friday, March 17, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., an info corner dedicated to Laval Nugent will be available for viewing. the famous jazz musician Goran Ilić, who will perform the songs of renowned Irish artists.
After the departure of the French from Karlovac in 1813, the Dubovac Castle was turned into a gunpowder factory and neglected. It stood like that until 1837 when the owner of the Castle became Laval Nugent. The Nugents were an old Irish noble family from the Westmeath and Riverstown area. The Nugent family is renovating the Dubovac in a romantic style, and the towers are getting crowns inspired by Gothic. Although historically inaccurate, this reconstruction saved the Dubovac Castle from decay and preserved it from collapse. The crowns on the towers were removed only after the Second World War when Dubovac was completely renovated into its present appearance.
Get to know the appearance of the Dubovac Castle during the time of the Nugent family from old postcards and photos from the holdings of the Museum of the City of Karlovac in an appropriate info corner where you will learn more about Nugent and his importance in Croatian history. Enjoy the Castle illuminated in green, Ilić's performances by famous Irish artists such as Van Morrison, The Pogues, Sinead O'Connor, Thin Lizzy, and U2 and remind yourself of the Irish heritage in Dubovac.
The working hours of the Defender Tower are extended until 10 p.m. for the duration of the concert.
